The Collective Story by Robert Floyd

“Dreamers are welcome” stands as the invitation to the collective story. The pages of this account are well worn, evidence of the hard lives of those who fill each tale. I invite you to a mystical land, a time long departed. To return is to journey to a day of warring brothers on free soil. To reflect is to hear the joy of the dulcimer tune in the night. To remember is to witness the strain of the mules, drawing the load behind them. To recall is to find a tender peace in the tired eyes of the hill folk. Taking a step back in time, one stands on the banks of the quiet river, listening for the melodic strumming of the angel boy’s strings. We venture to a land of old barns and frail fences, where children gather to observe the rider and his steed. I beckon you beside the cast iron pot, its contents filling the room with memories. Like ripples in the pond, time echoes. Like the leaves in the stream, the course of life carries us forward. We find ourselves forgetting, forsaking this mystical land. May we carry with us the archaic songs that first called our fathers into these singing hills so long ago. ◆
