Free and open to the public; masks required

Marianne Worthington, author of The Girl Singer

Each year, University of the Cumberlands’ English Department invites writers to campus to present the Palmer Lecture, a special event in honor of the late Dr. Robert Palmer.

This year’s lecturer is not new to our campus, and like Palmer, is a beloved Cumberlands professor. Worthington is Associate Professor of Communication and Journalism. She also is co-founder and editor of Still: The Journal, an online literary magazine publishing writers, artists, and musicians with ties to Appalachia since 2009. Her work has appeared in Oxford American, CALYX, Chapter 16, Ethel, and Shenandoah, among other places. She received the Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council and artist’s grants from Kentucky Foundation for Women and the Berea Appalachian Sound Archives Fellowship. She co-edited Piano in a Sycamore: Writing Lessons from the Appalachian Writers’ Workshop and is author of a poetry chapbook. Her poetry collection, The Girl Singer, was released in late 2021 from Fireside Industries, an imprint of University Press of Kentucky.

The 2022 Palmer Lecture will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, April 4, in the CSC Biology Lecture Hall. This event is free and open to the public. Please note: masks are required to be worn inside UC facilities.
