Next Generation Creative Writing Contest

Great news! Our contest will open Fall 2023. Check back for more information!

The Next Generation Creative Writing Contest, sponsored by University of the Cumberlands’ English Department and its literary journal Pensworth, welcomes submissions of original fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry from currently enrolled eighth through twelfth grade students, who attend school within a 200 mile radius of Williamsburg, Kentucky.

*Submit one piece of fiction or nonfiction (up to 20 pages) or 3-5 poems. Pages may be single (poetry) or double spaced (prose); 10-12 point font preferred. Please include your name, contact info, and word count on your document’s first page.

*Upload a .docx, .doc, .pdf, or .rtf file only. Use a common font (such as Times or Arial) and check your file to see that your formatting (italics, tabs, columns, etc.) displays as you wish. Uploaded manuscripts with other file extensions will NOT be read. Editors prefer submitters to name their files by last name and genre. For example, Smith_fiction.doc for a short story.
